Aims/ Objectives/ Rationale:

The module will examine the means by which mathematics statements are justified. It will serve as a useful preliminary to students undertaking tertiary level study of mathematics who would like to understand better the nature of proof in mathematics.

Module Content:

The module will examine what is the appropriate justification of mathematical statements. The module will examine the place of proof in mathematics, from Euclid to Gödel. The module will consider types of proof – by deduction, induction, exhaustion, contradiction, disproof by counter example – and the proof creation process. Proofs to be considered will include topics in arithmetic, algebra, geometry and trigonometry, calculus and statistics. The module will consider the place of intuition in perceiving mathematical truth.
